Hats off to Birmingham

Okay so this week is a sad week for me…I moved back home from Birmingham at the weekend which meant packing up my little top floor Ivory Tower! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a little bit upset – but it’s a good job I have this Ivory Tower to ease my separation anxiety!

Having a house in Birmingham as well as my family home meant that I could spread my wardrobe equally between the two cities, which is now causing the slight issue of storing the clothes that I seem to have accumulated over the past three years into one singular place!

In the midst of sorting and organising this madness, I came across my trusty trilby hat and Chelsea boots, which I had forgotten all about! So with the weather being so nice I thought I would team them with a pair of loose comfortable shorts, whilst I run around organising my life into one place again! If you can't tell already, I am so obsessed with this white Zara top as this is the second post I have done on it – but it has just gone into the sale (which is kind of depressing)...and the link is at the bottom if you want to check it out! It is also a slight obsession of mine to have a shirt or jumper of some form tied around my waist, and having this green Topshop shirt tied loosely meant that I felt less exposed, especially with wearing shorts and small heels in the daytime!
Now...back to unpacking...

Summer Time | Pimms O'Clock

Just a quick drinks post today! With the weather being so shockingly sunny in England at the moment, it’s made me think about my favourite summer drink. Pimms is the perfect social drink and is even more fun to make! With the mix being one part Summer Punch and three parts lemonade, it really is an easy drink to sip while with your friends and even takes under five minutes to create! All you need to do is place this mix into a jug of ice and then throw in your mint, cucumber, strawberries and oranges - voilĂ ! It doesn't have to be a jug, but I personally think that if you are going to make this punch then less is definitely not more especially when it comes to alcohol! The fact that it contains fresh fruit is very refreshing for nice weather – and also means you can make yourself feel better by classing it as one of your five a day!!!

The ingredients I used are shown below. I used a cheap alternative to Pimms which was called “Austins” from Aldi, and I couldn't tell the difference at all! Add some striped straws for a fun feel and remember, its thirsty work - but someone's got to do it!

Missing Mexico | By night

Having a week long holiday is perfect for me, as each night means a different dress and overall look. Set in a tropical landscape of evergreens, the hotel that I stayed in was a dream backdrop for any of my outfit choices, and was also a far cry from the typical brick wall I stand in front of in England! The resort had a constant theme of water with it being stood on the beachfront and it continued this by incorporating fountains and streams into every open hallway. This setting, along with the airy thatched roof, meant that the atmosphere exhumed peace and tranquillity!

The resort was also a host to varying cuisines, including a French, Asian, Mexican, Mediterranean and Caribbean restaurant and had even decorated each room accordingly. This meant that I could tailor my outfit choices to fit the mood on the night…ranging from a plunging navy jumpsuit for a sophisticated French vibe – to a Grecian feel, with a slicked back bun and a giant gold choker.

My favourite looks of the week consisted of two maxi dresses, and as I don’t often get to wear them in England - it was a nice change! They were both from Australian online brand Sabo Skirt, which have some amazing pieces for going abroad. The first dress was a khaki maxi and the thigh split detailing was perfect for showing off a tan! The thin material meant that the dress hung elegantly, and I felt comfortable as the high neckline seemed to balance out the revealing high leg split! The draped lime dress was another one of my favourites from the vacation. Worn with a gold belt and arm cuff gave the perfect beach feel, and the draped feature meant that the dream of two deserts also became a reality – win win!

Missing Mexico | By day

Considering it is “throwback Thursday”, I thought I would indulge in a little holiday reminiscing! After months sat in a lecture theatre and behind my desk – spending my days sipping from coconuts, sun worshipping and cocktail drinking was a welcome exchange. My family and I stayed in Riviera Maya, Mexico which is just outside of Cancun and meant that we were tucked away from any of the hustle and bustle in the centre. With the beach on my doorstep (quite literally) it was hard not to spend the majority of my days with sand between my toes and the sea breeze in my hair!

I dedicated my revision breaks to a little online holiday shopping to get me through the last hard months of University.  On my hunt for the perfect swimwear I came across this fun monochrome Zara one piece, the perfect alternative to my usual bikini’s. This simple swimsuit offered the perfect coverage for boat trips and sitting by the pool (it also helped to disguise my new found love for nachos) - but also meant that I could still tan due to the low rise back.

Due to accumulating multiple sets of bikinis over the years, mismatching has become one of my favourite options, and teaming this timeless animal print bandeau with simple black bottoms was definitely my go to set of the holiday! I really feel that no beach outfit is fully complete without a large floppy hat - and this straw H&M sunhat was the ideal choice for any bikini set. When trying to cover up from the sun I went for a nautical look with a loose fitting striped top, which was easy to throw on over my bikini when going for lunch (basically more nachos indulgence)!

Dressing for the sun is my absolute favourite thing to do and my holiday blues are well and truly kicking in! Time for another holiday I think…

Monochrome | World cup weekend

This weekend marked the official start of the world cup for England, so I thought I would wear my own version of a white shirt (not quite the England kit but nonetheless - it’s the thought that counts). In typical England style it has been a pretty rainy weekend, especially today, but this didn't stop me from wearing my favourite shoes at the minute – my Birkenstocks! They are so comfortable and can literally throw them on with any outfit.

This relaxed monochrome outfit is perfect for being out and about running errands –especially today as it is father’s day…there was regrettably a lot of last minute dashing to the shops to buy a card (oops)! Obviously the bad weather meant that my leather jacket was needed yet again, and the oversized bag was of course necessary to hold my sunglasses JUST IN CASE there was a slight glimmer of hope for that thing called “sunshine”.

welcome | the ivory tower

As this is my first ever blog post, I feel it’s only right to introduce what this is for me personally and its overall intention. “The Ivory Tower” has connotations of a place of retreat and seclusion away from ordinary things. For me, I want to adapt this as a modern idea. This blog will be my place of retreat to express my interest for various different aspects of my life - including fashion, recipes, fitness and general lifestyle. This idea was also developed over the past year, as I have lived in an attic room in Birmingham whilst I finished my degree. My house mates and I had named this little top floor room "The Ivory Tower" (filled with fairy lights and candles) – and it is over these months that my ambition to create this blog grew. Therefore this name also has a particular personal importance to me! This is hopefully going to be an outlet for me to be creative and share my favourite things especially regarding fashion, but it is also going to be a huge learning curve for me…so I appreciate your support and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I thought I would start this off with a photograph of one of my favourite things...a cup of coffee!
